Audience Participation Required

I am in need of some new reading material. To fill my spare time. That two minutes a couple of times a day when everyone is content and not calling on Mommy to do something. So, here is the short list of things I like to fill my brain with.

*Christian Fiction
*John Grisham and others like him
*Michael Crichton and others like him
*Child Rearing books - and I am in need of books that focus on dealing with the heart. (please bypass pop-psychology books. I don't have the time nor inclination)
*Applying the Scriptures to my life - any facet

Also, I am hitting the wall as far as summer foods. Need recipe inspiration. Please donate your favorite summer recipe to my collection! In turn, I will come up with a few to post on here in the next few days to share with you! Oh, and dessert recipes, too. Mmmmm...dessert. The bestest part of a meal, yes?

If you are a perfectionist like I am I'm reading the Relief of Imperfection right now. And if you like Christian romance Susan May Warren and Catherine Palmer is always good. Hope you find something good to read.

Have you read Ray Blackston's series: Flabbergasted, A Delirious Summer, Lost in Rooville? Fast, uncomplicated, fun reads. Good beach books ... or "Pretend You're At The Beach" books :)

As for a recipe, my favorite one right now is this (I leave out the scallions):

Couscous Salad

10 ounces couscous
6 scallions, trimmed and sliced
4 Roma tomatoes, quartered
1 seedless cucumber, sliced into half-moons
1/2 cup feta, crumbled
3 Tbs fresh lemon juice
2 Tbs extra-virgin olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

Place the couscous in a large bowl and pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over the top. Cover and let stand for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

Stir in rest of ingredients.

It's good the next day straight from the icebox as well. Yum. (Er, I also just use a regular cucumber and remove the seeds.)

... more books ...

For funny, easy, sweet reads, I've also enjoyed Philip Gulley's Harmony series. Sort of a Quaker minister Garrison Keillor. I've read the first four, maybe five, and am ready to read more. His non-fiction books read similarly as well. Very simple to read a chapter, set the book down and pick it up the next night (or in a couple of days) to read more.

And one that I keep going back to is Catherine Marshall's A Man Called Peter, the story of her marriage to Peter Marshall. I love this book. I've never read any of his sermons or prayers, but the excerpts she has in her book are intriguing.

Why, yes, I am a librarian. What gave it away? The t-shirt? I'll stop now with my request that if you get good child rearing book suggestions, please pass them on. (My husband and I are starting your suggestion of To Train Up Your Child as soon as it arrives in our mailbox. Boy, we should have started that one sooner rather than later ... )

For Christian Fiction try something by Francine Rivers. The Mark of the Lion series is excellent (3 book series). Also she has a book series called the Lineage of Grace that is based on women in Christ's lineage.

Child rearing...there is a book called Sheparding a Child's Heart (I'll have to go upstairs and get the author for you b/c I don't remember).

Bobbie - Ted Tripp. Got it, read it, love it. And I love Francine Rivers, I just haven't read much from her. Also, email me. aubreyfreeman at gmail dot com. You know, if you get a chance.

Jo - I can't wait to read A Man Called Peter. I knew I should have just asked you in the first place. Hope you all enjoy the To Train Up A Child book. I am currently absorbed in Teach Them Diligently. Will let you know on that one. And thanks for the recipe. I can't wait to try it! (think I will leave out the scallions, too)

Stacia - Girl, I knew I could count on you to have read some good Christian Romance! Let me know about the Relief from Imperfection...I am curious to hear your review.

Hey number one niece - I'm reading "The Last Lecture" - Randy Pausch. Wonderful life lessons and lots of wisdom sprinkled with a bit of humor. Sadly, this amazing teacher has been diagnosed with cancer. Should I be so lucky to have such a wonderful outlook on life when faced with such a challenge. I highly recommend this read!
